Building a Brand Image

Four years ago, I gave up a large and secure salary to begin a new and uncertain venture. Today I am fully connected to the creative person I was born to be, and I have never been happier…

Chichester Harbour

At the close of 2018 I wrote Press Reset, a blog about defining new purpose after retiring from an executive vice president role in a global company. The role had required extensive long-haul flights and follow-the-sun business hours and had taught me much about demand generation marketing and sales techniques across a wide diversity of cultures.

Unforeseen storms buffeted the path to realising my new purpose as a fine-art photographer. Neither the UK Government’s Covid restrictions on freedoms of movement and trade, nor the multifaceted cost of these lockdowns were in my future venture plans.

In 2019 I was writing travel coffee table books and also shooting weddings, portraits and commercial jobs in equal mix. Then in March 2020 the world as we knew it turned upside down. Prime Minister Boris Johnson announced new rules which meant people could only leave home for essential shopping, or to care for someone elderly or vulnerable. A time for reflection.

Whilst I found early purpose as a Patron and now Trustee for an incredibly worthwhile charity Tigers4Ever – which provides Bandhavgarh wild tigers with a future in their natural habitat – I reflected that my fledgling business was too generalist to be fulfilling. I needed a more distilled sense of direction once the lockdown restrictions ended which would build upon the unique blend of my own skills and experiences.

Photography had been my constant companion for over 40-years, variously as an amateur and a professional. I had learned marketing and sales from education (MBA) and twenty years practical implementation with top-tier companies. I also owned a yacht for 14 years and sailed on numerous adventures including sailing from the Azores to Portsmouth. Combining these three loves would shape my business in a way that would add unexpected value to my clients.

Thus, during the time of national lockdown I built a new business model which laid the foundation for a niche photography business that would grow by specialisation. In 2020 I registered a trademark logo for Incredible Journey Photography, which is represented as a sea wave that is moving forward and adapting. By the time UK lockdowns and measures ended in December 2021, I had streamlined my business down to commercial photography for companies in the marine and destination industries, helping them to stand out from the crowd and to grow their business as a premium brand.

To be a part of the digital age requires a brand image that stands out. My maritime and destination clients share their values and unique selling points and I invest time designing and creating a portfolio of photographs which linger in the mind of the consumer. Together we build a pictorial image of their team, their customer service, their products as well as other parts of their business which represent the essence of a premium brand image. These themed photographs are designed to encourage their customers to take action, which in turn supports my client’s business growth.
